George Lusk - RECYCLE

George Lusk was the Chairman of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee. His name was printed on the numerous posters pasted up around Whitechapel appealing for information during the murders. The Whitechapel Vigilance Committee was generally made up of local shop-keepers and property-owners. He and the Committee's members petitioned the government to offer a reward for information about the killer (then assumed to be one man; known to the public as ‘Jack the Ripper’). When the government refused, the committee put up its own reward and began to pay unemployed men to patrol the East End at night, armed only with a strong stick and a shrill whistle.
