What was the Arts and Crafts Movement?
In the mid-19th century Britain, there was an attempt to reform design and decoration, which later developed to the Arts and Crafts movement and flourished in Europe and North America. It demonstrated the integration of decorative arts and handcrafts, disputing the result of the industrial thrust which brought complicated, soulless and stereotyped products.
What characterised the Arts and Crafts Movement?
The reformers were hoping to revive the craftsmanship and traditions during the Middle Ages, advocating natural, romantic and vernacular forms of arts and design. It had a strong influence on the arts in Europe until it was displaced by Modernism in the 1930s, and its influence continued among craft makers, designers, and town planners long afterwards.
Who contributed to the Arts and Crafts Movement?
Although the principles and style on which it was based had been developing in England for at least 20 years. It was inspired by the ideas of architect Augustus Pugin, writer John Ruskin, and designer William Morris.
